5 Reasons You Are Not Moving Forward—Even If You Are Working Hard

You’re working hard, I know. Why then aren’t you getting results? Why is your progress so slow? Despite your best efforts, you don’t seem to be making any headway. Exhausted, disillusioned, and quite frankly, a little discouraged, you feel like you’re pushing a stalled car uphill.

Don’t despair. The journey to a great destination often takes longer than you expect. You can take a step back and examine your situation; there may be a specific reason why you aren’t moving forward as fast as you’d like.

1. You May Be Doing the Wrong Things

You may be stalled because you are doing the wrong things. Activity doesn’t always mean productivity. Busyness doesn’t equate to effectiveness. Being in motion doesn’t always lead to progress. Your efforts must be guided by a clear goal and a sound plan. Assuming you have these, perhaps the most important step you can take at this point is to seek guidance from a trusted advisor who can share insights to get you unstuck.

2. You May Be Doing Too Many Things

A lack of focus may be responsible for your lack of progress. Multi-tasking is like trying to hold multiple conversations at once. It leads to confusion and a feeling of overwhelm. There are so many things to do and so little time to do it all. I get it. But to accelerate your progress you must resolve to focus single-mindedly on your most important activity, and move to the next one only when you’re done. The discipline of focus leads to momentum.

3. You May be Trying to Make it Alone

You don’t have to travel the journey alone. Success is a team sport. You have extraordinary potential, but you don’t have all the gifts, talents, skills, and abilities. Partner with like-minded people who bring additional strengths to the mix and with whom you can work in synergy. Let them come along and offer help. Focus on your strengths and leverage theirs. And that alone may propel you to the next level.

4. You May Be Avoiding Challenges

Every journey brings challenges. The going gets tough at times. But you must press forth. Often, the way “to” is by going “through”. You get to a mountain and change direction, only to be met by a river. You change direction again, only to be met by wild beasts. You failed to recognize that you could pass through the mountain in the first place. Challenges are meant to be overcome.

5. You May Be Trying to By-Pass the Process

There are no shortcuts to birthing a baby; you must go through the 9-month process. Every journey towards a meaningful destination requires that you go through a process of growth that pushes you to become a better version of yourself. This is uncomfortable; you must let go of old, comfortable mindsets and habits and adopt new ones. The process of change takes time. At first, you don’t see much, but soon you see a swell, and by enduring the process, you birth a new you.
