Nugget 1

Goals give focus to your life.

When you pursue a goal, you organize your life accordingly. Your goals dictate the activities that get your time and energy. To reach your goals, you must give them your attention and put in the effort. It prevents you from spending your resources willy-nilly; you know exactly where you must invest resources.

Nugget 2

Whatever you do, give us your best.

You have a unique contribution to make in the world, and we want the best of it. Don’t get into the habit of doing things halfheartedly. Give your best to everything you do; people depend on it. If it’s worth doing, it’s worth giving it your best effort. That doesn’t mean doing it perfectly; it means giving it your all.

Nugget 3

Whom you spend your time with affects you—whether or not you’re aware of it.

Your social network matters. People you mingle with have an impact on you—sometimes, their influence goes beyond what you imagine. For good or for bad, when you spend a lot of time with a group of people, you begin to think and talk like them. Whether you realize or not, your associations affect your result—and happiness. Be intentional about your connections.

Nugget 4

Don’t let busyness prevent you from taking time to think and reflect.

It’s easy to get so busy that you no longer have time to meditate. However, you must never forget that thinking give you an edge. Great results demand great thinking. Thus, time spent thinking, reflecting, planning, and strategizing is time well invested. In your busy schedule, always free up time to think.

Nugget 5

Don’t make excuses. Apologize, take responsibility, and seek to make things right.

When you make a mistake or otherwise fail to honor a commitment, you must take ownership. Recognize your failing and seek to fix it. Making excuses is an unskillful attempt to make you keep face, but it doesn’t; you know when you’ve messed up, and people know too. Excuses waste time, time that you can use to make repairs.

Nugget 6

If you wait for everything to be perfect to complete a task, you’ll never finish it.

The endless search for perfection thrusts you in the never-ending loop of tweaking your project. When you operate with that mindset, you never get never complete anything because nothing is ever good enough for you to put it to rest. You should strive for excellence in your work. However, don’t confuse excellence with perfection. Excellence means seeking to produce your best work within a reasonable time. Once that time is elapsed, you must ship the goods.

Nugget 7

If you’re going to leave something behind anyway, you might as well make it great.

When it’s all set and done, something will stay behind you. While you’re still active, you get the privilege to define what you leave behind. Since you’re going to leave a legacy, why not decide to leave a great legacy? You leave a great legacy by the decisions you make every day, the work you produce, the goals you pursue, and the people you influence.
