7 Secrets to Reveal Your Greatness

When I started high school (in the mid-80s), I thought my job was to pass my classes, i.e. 60%, nothing more. When I received my first report card, my marks were, to my great pleasure, above that goal. I assumed I would be off the hook from having to bring my parents to parent-teacher meetings, as those meetings were usually for the parents of failing students–so I thought.

I wasn’t off the hook; some of my teachers summoned my parents.

I was baffled, worried, scared.

At the meetings, my teachers were singing variations of the same dissonant tune: “Although your son is passing my class, he is wasting his potential. He can do far better than what he is currently doing. With his potential, he can become whatever he wants in life, but…” Yikes!

I spare you the details of what happened when I got home…

It took me about a decade to truly understand what they were saying. Looking back, I definitely could have done better. I should have been more diligent with the potential I’ve been blessed with.

We should all be more diligent with the potential we’ve been blessed with, and I’m convinced you too can do far more than what you’ve done so far. You’ve yet to tap into your full potential. I believe there’s greatness in you. You may not know it, but there is. It’s locked in you and longs to be revealed. You have a unique contribution to make to the world, and therein lies your true greatness.

Here are 7 “secrets” to help you reveal your greatness.

  1. Know thyself. What are your strengths and gifts? What are you passionate about? How can you contribute to the world to make it a better place? These questions are a starting point to get you moving in the right direction.
  2. Dare to be you. Don’t waste time trying to be someone else, be it someone you admire. No matter how hard you try, you’ll never be someone else. Don’t envy someone else’s abilities; share your own. Also, bear in mind that not everyone is going to accept the real you. That’s fine. Make the decision to be you – the authentic you – regardless of who likes it or not.
  3. Don’t limit yourself. As stated before, you’re capable of far more than you think. Your true greatness lies beyond the confines of your comfort zone. Don’t aim low when you can achieve high. A word of caution here: be careful not to be running in every direction, claiming to be expanding your limits. There’s a world of possibilities and opportunities, but you have to decide what you’re going to focus on.
  4. Take responsibility. You must understand that, if you’re going to reveal your greatness, it’s up to you, not somebody else. Although others may help and partner with you along the way, in the end, it’s up to you to make things happen. You’re responsible to start, you’re responsible to persevere, you’re responsible to seek help when you need it, you’re responsible for learning what you need to learn. Take charge and go for it.
  5. Work diligently. If you’re going to reveal your greatness, you’re going to have to work. You need to sacrifice and sweat a little. You can’t be lazy and wishy-washy. You have to be bold and take action. Think about the people you admire; chances are, they all have this in common: they work and put in the effort to materialize their vision and reveal their greatness. There’s no way around it.
  6. Surround yourself wisely. Some people make your heart sing; others make it sink. If you’re going to share your heart’s music and reveal your greatness, you must pay close attention to the kind of people you spend your time with. I heard someone say: you can’t learn to fly like an eagle by sitting with ducks.
  7. Start today. You don’t have the luxury to delay, as life is short. Even if you start small, start. Do something every day, something that’s going to move you in the right direction. If you’re not implementing, you should at least be preparing: getting training, mentoring and organizing your resources.

Your greatness is meant to be revealed and to be shared with the world. Offer your unique contribution, as you won’t be fulfilled until you do.
