10 Essential Ways to Express You Care

To express our care for others and to receive care from them is one the greatest joys and needs in life. There are many ways to show others we care about them. In this post, I share 10 essential ways I believe we should all use to express our care for others.

  1. Give Compliments Generously. Everyone loves to be appreciated for who they are and for what they do. Any reason is valid to compliment the people you care about. Acknowledge their strengths, their attire, their performance on a task, or anything else you find interesting or impressive about them. Be generous with your compliments.
  2. Listen Attentively. Most people enjoy speaking about themselves and sharing their perspective on things. Listening attentively to what they have to say lets them know that you value their ideas. Always seek to understand what they are trying to convey and appreciate their perspective (even when you disagree with it).
  3. Give a Thoughtful Gift. Receiving a thoughtful gift warms the heart; it shows us that the other person was thinking about us. The gift doesn’t have to be revolutionary or expensive for us to feel that the other person cares. When offering a gift, the key is to choose the gift carefully. Don’t just give something you like. Give something you believe will be appreciated by the other person. Be thoughtful.
  4. Spend Quality Time. Nowadays, we often fail to spend quality time with our loved ones because we are so busy; it’s very easy to be distracted and let the important things in life, such as our relationships, go unattended. Knowing this, be intentional about spending quality time with the people you care about.
  5. Celebrate Special Moments. Throughout life we have milestone moments, which are important to us and should be highlighted. Organize (or attend) celebrations for special moments in the lives of people you care about, such as their wedding day, school graduation or 50th birthday. Celebrate their successes and rejoice with them. Be genuinely happy for them.
  6. Give Space. No matter how close our relationship with someone else is, we sometimes need “me” time. Be sensitive to the need of others for their private time. Don’t feel offended when they request it. Allowing them to have their space shows you care.
  7. Offer Help. People who are willing and able to help can sometimes be hard to find. A friend who is willing and able to help is precious. Be one of these friends: be willing to help to the best of your abilities. Help your friends complete their tasks. Help them grow. Help them achieve their goals. Do whatever you can to help them move their life forward.
  8. Be There During Hard Times. We all face hardship at times: the loss of a loved one, illness, a dire financial situation, heartbreaks, etc. In these times, being well-surrounded and supported is vital. When times are hard, your friends and loved ones need you. They need your presence more than they need your answers. If you can help, do so. If you don’t know what to do, just be there and be available when they need an open ear and empathic heart.
  9. Say That You Care. This should be a given, but it’s worth mentioning since many often take this for granted, and fail to verbalize their care for others. As for compliments, be generous in explicitly expressing your love for others. Say it. Write it. Sing it. Draw it. Let them know with no ambiguity that you care.
  10. Forgive. Although many of us are reluctant to admit it, the truth is we all make mistakes. Even with our best efforts, we mess up at times. When we offend someone and he or she forgives us, it touches us deeply. When the tables are turned and we forgive them for their mistakes and shortcomings, it speaks volumes and shows we care about the relationships in a profound way. Learn to forgive, as it’s something you will have to do for the rest of your life.

These are, I believe, 10 essential ways we can show others we care about them. I encourage you to use all of these to nurture your relationships. And remember, the number of ways to express you care for someone else is only limited by your imagination. Be creative.
