How To Deal With Negative People – Part 3

Some negative people are just annoying. They whine and complain about everything, but they don’t intend to hurt anyone—at least not intentionally. They’re like flies: they buzz in your ear but they don’t sting.

However, some negative people are mean. They don’t stop at whining and complaining; they attack you personally. They’re like wasps; they sting. And it hurts.

As mentioned in the previous post, do what you can to stay away from negative people. However, I’m aware that this may not always be possible. For instance, they might be members of your immediate family and you can’t avoid them. Also, they may be tracking you down to sting you. And when you ignore them, they feel all the more motivated to come after you.

One thing you must not do is stoop down to their level and begin to sting them with yourself. Retaliation only adds oil to the fire and leads to pain and misery. You don’t fight negativity with negativity, just like you don’t fight fire with fire. Refuse to play their game.

Get Help

Assuming you have made an effort to confront the negative person and resolve the issue amicably and that you can’t stay away from them, it’s time to get help. If you’re being bullied, you don’t have to accept it.

Fortunately, if this is in the context of a relationship at work or another formal organization, the organization in question must have policies and procedures to handle these types of situations. You can speak to your supervisor or your human resources department, who will take you in charge and see to it that the issue is resolved in short order.

If this is happening in your personal life, you may need the support of a trusted advisor, and perhaps even consult a legal professional if the situation gets out of hand.

Bottom line, you know that you don’t have to deal with negative people on your own. You don’t have to pretend that everything is fine and that you have the situation under control. You can enlist the support of specialists.

My message is simple: if you needed, get help.
