How To Make This Year Exceptional

The upcoming year can turn out exceptional. It doesn’t matter how great or grim the past year was, you can make the next one your best so far. But it won’t just happen. You must step into the new year with intent and the resolve that you’re going to make the most of it.

To a great extent, the upcoming year will be what you make of it. Sure, there will be unforeseen events and situations, but ultimately, your decisions and actions will define how the year turns out.

Goals

Next year will go as fast as the past year, and if, you’re not intentional about your goals, it’ll fly by, and you may have nothing to show for it. Setting goals provides you with an opportunity to define where you should invest your time, energy, money, talent, and other resources.

What do you plan to achieve in the upcoming year? More specifically, when you think about your career, what do you want to accomplish?

When you think about your health, is this the year when you’ll finally lose the extra 20 lbs you accumulated around your waist?

Is this the year when you’re getting out of debt? Is this the year when you write your book?

Think about all the areas of your life and define what goals you want to pursue in each one.

Once you have your list of goals, I recommend you identify your most important goal; that is, the one goal you must achieve no matter what in the next year. If you can only reach one (and just one) goal, which one should it be?

Commit to working on your most important goal every day until you achieve it.

Experiences

Life is about the experiences you make. If you look back over your life, you’ll see that many of your fond memories are experiences you’ve made.

For instance, you may have traveled to Europe with your parents when you were a kid. Perhaps you attended day camps in the summer as a teenager. Maybe you jumped out of an airplane with a parachute during your college years.

Whatever the experience, you can recognize the indelible mark it made on you. Creating memorable experiences will contribute to making this an exceptional year.

There are countless experiences for you to make. What are some of the experiences you wish to make during the next year?

If you have a family, include the experiences you want to make as a family. For example, if you wish to take your kids to Walt Disney, include it on your list. Although the activity per se is more geared toward your kids than you, it’ll be a memorable moment for you too.

When you have your list of experiences, determine when in the year you should make them.

As with your goal, it’s useful to identify which is your most important experience. If you can only make one experience which should it be? You don’t have to limit yourself to one, of course. It’s just a way for you to prioritize your list.

The goals you set and the experiences you plan will contribute to making your year exceptional. You know what you want. Now, you must take the proper action steps to make it happen.
