Paying the Price to Reach Your Ambitious Goals

My journey toward graduating from university wasn’t an easy one. I signed up for engineering school and embarked on a five years journey. There were many sleepless nights, trying to complete term papers and to prepare for exams. There were failures and setbacks.

Along the way, I saw the carcasses of many students who couldn’t go on. At times, the easiest thing to do was to give up and do something else. But despite all this, I pressed forward and earned my engineering degree.

Although I’m no longer my field of study, the journey of earning my degree as taught me a lot about reaching goals. And one of these valuable lessons is that achieving a significant goal always comes at a cost. Always.

Some people make reaching ambitious goals look easy. However, there’s always a story of great effort and sacrifice behind great achievements.

When you pursue an ambitious goal, you must be ready to overcome obstacles, experience setbacks, and endure pain. It’s part of the journey. You can’t let challenges deter you from your goal. If you do, then perhaps your goal wasn’t valuable enough for you.

When you’ve “burned your ships” and committed to achieving your goal, you almost don’t have the choice but to continue pressing forward until you reach your destination. Even if you have to go through the fire, your commitment continues to drive toward your goal.

Before you launch your pursuit of a goal, consider the cost you’ll have to pay to reach it. And if you’re not ready to pay that cost, leave the goal alone and find another goal. If you’re going to pursue a goal, choose a goal you’re prepared to sacrifice for—because that’s what it’ll require.

You don’t achieve ambitious goals simply because you wish to. You achieve them because “pay” the associated price. And when you reach your goal, you appreciate its value.
