The Importance of Delayed Gratification

What you do today will affect your results “tomorrow” (as in later in life). The way you ensure you achieve your desired results later is by doing the right thing, day after day after day.

If you eat your seeds today, you can’t reap a fruit tomorrow. Eating your seeds today means sacrificing the fruit you could have tomorrow. If you want to enjoy fruit, you can’t eat your seeds; you must plant them, nurture them, and wait.

Great results take time. You have to be prepared to work for a long time before you can taste the fruit of your labor. Day after day, you show up and do the work. And at first, it doesn’t look like much, but you persevere and keep doing what you must, until one day, you begin to see a stem.

If you want exceptional results in life, you must practice delayed gratification. You can’t begin your journey today and expect that you’re going to reach your destination right way, just like the farmer doesn’t sow his seed today and expect and harvest tomorrow.

For example, fostering a vibrant relationship with your spouse, building a dynamic business, becoming a prolific writer, becoming a skillful musician, etc., demands time and energy. At first, you may struggle at first, but if you persevere, you eventually eat the fruit of your hard work.

Don’t succumb to urge for immediate gratification: the I-want-it-all-now attitude. Wanting to have it all today, you sacrifice a great return tomorrow.

Success in any area of life requires that you go through a process. The mistake that many people do is they try to bypass the process (because it’s difficult and takes time). And they can’t figure out why they can produce the desired result in their lives. They want immediate results; they aren’t ready to do the required work. It doesn’t work like this. To achieve success, you must endure the process.

There’s a time for everything. There’s a time to sow, and there’s time to reap. And you must learn to recognize the difference. Before you can reap results, you must sow work. But if you persevere, your results will be extraordinary.
