The Positive Attitude Challenge – Shield Yourself

The world is filled with negative people, who aren’t timid about spreading their negativity around them. Like a bad cold, they spread their germs all around. Wherever they go, they cough their negativity on others and infect them with their negative thinking.

Sometimes, these people simply don’t know better. They’re just reproducing behaviors they’ve observed from their parents and others in their environment. Like kids repeating cuss words they heard their parents say, they spread negativity without even realizing what they’re doing.

Sometimes, these people have been hurt and because of this, they have become bitter, and out of their hurt, they spread negativity wherever they go.

Sometimes, quite frankly, they just get a kick out of throwing darts of negativity at others.

Unfortunately, some of that negativity can be directed at you. For no apparent reason—at least none that you can think off—you become the object of their negativity. As if you were a dartboard, they throw some of their darts of negativity at you, wanting to pierce your heart: they criticize you, gossip about you, slander your name, etc.

No matter their reason for spreading negativity at your expense, you don’t have to let it affect you. You don’t have to let other’s opinions bring you down. You don’t have to let their smearing campaigns destroy you. And above all, you don’t have to compromise your character and stoop down to their level by retaliating and seeking revenge.

Being a target of someone’s negativity can be hurtful. I get it. But what others think of you isn’t as important as what you think of yourself. You can’t control how others act, but you sure can control how you react. You can’t stop people from talking about you, but you can choose your attitude. You decide your actions. You decide your attitude. And you decide what you spread in the world.

It takes mental and emotional discipline not to let other people’s negativity get to you. But to cultivate a positive attitude, you must shield yourself and refuse to let their negativity crush you; allowing yourself to get affected by their negativity can send you into a downward vortex it can be hard to come out of.
