The Starting Point of Cultivating Excellence

You owe it to yourself and to the people you serve to become the best that you can be at what you do. Becoming the best that you can be in your chosen field is what I call cultivating excellence.

Cultivating excellence begins with a definite intention to become excellent at what you do; no one becomes excellent by accident. Being average doesn’t require that much. However, if you want to become excellent at what you do, you must make this your objective.

What is it that you want to become excellent at? What activity (or activities), if you performed it with excellence, would make the most significant difference in your work? By answering these questions, you discover where your time and energy should be invested.

When you determine which activities you must master to become world class at what you do, you must embark on the journey toward excellence. And that journey demands that you commit to doing something every day to become better at those activities.

Excellence isn’t achieved in one day; it takes time and effort. You must make a few steps forward every day. Every. Single. Day. Like the tortoise of the fable, steadiness wins the race. Consistency is the key.

To become excellent, you can’t accept the status quo. You sit on your laurels as if you have arrived. You must consistently be improving. In that sense, excellence is a mindset: it’s a frame of mind that pushes you to strive to become better at your craft.

If you have a modicum of talent and you develop it by putting forth consistent effort, with time, you have no choice but to become a master in your field. Of course, this implies that you’ve chosen a field that leverages your strengths (not a field that is in one of your areas of weakness).

With discipline, excellence is achievable. But it all begins with you making the firm decision to become excellent at what you do and supporting that decision with consistent action.

What daily activities have you been doing to become better at what you do?
