The Two Most Important Things You Can Do For Your Team

Great goals are achieved by teams. Individual work has its merit. But most of your success will come from collaborating with a team.

Teamwork isn’t always easy, but the benefits outweigh the challenges. What the team members can achieve together is exponentially greater than the sum of what each member can achieve on their own.

As a team member, you must remember that your actions have an impact on the team. And the two most important things you can do for your team are: doing your share and showing you care.

1. Do Your Share

If you’re a member of the team, it’s because you have a contribution to make. You bring your expertise and a set of skills that are vital to the team’s success. Accordingly, responsibilities and duties are assigned to you, and you must fulfill them with excellence if the team is to reach its targets.

If you fail to fulfill your tasks or if you handle them with mediocrity, not only you suffer, but the whole team suffers. When team members slack off, others have to pick up the slack or targets have to be pushed back to account for that lack of productivity.

Just like sports team illustrate, a team wins and loses together. Your team expects you to carry your weight and perform your tasks to the best of your abilities. And when each team member brings their “A” game, the team wins.

2. Show You Care

A team is a unit, which means that team members must connect with one another. They must care about one another. They must support each other and have each other’s back.

Team members can’t sabotage and backstab one another and expect to achieve their goals at the same time. A negative attitude and strife are detrimental to the team and its members.

You have a role to play in the atmosphere that reigns in the team. The foundation of it all is that you must show that you care about the team, its members, and its goals.

You show you care by your attitude towards others. You show you care when you land a helping hand to a team member. You show you care by the words of encouragement you dispense. You show you care by respecting the expertise of your fellow team members. You show you care by celebrating team members when they reach milestones. There are endless ways to show you care.

When you’re involved in a team, make sure that you do your share and show that you care. These are the most important things you can do for your team.
