You Must Start Doing Great Work Now—Even If Only for This Reason…

You’re going to work anyway. So, why not do great work?

Even if you’re not yet in your ideal job, even if you haven’t arrived at your final destination in your career, start doing great work now.

Don’t delay, saying, “When I’ll change jobs, that’s when I’ll start doing great work. ” Begin now. Wherever you are, train yourself to do great work.

You don’t need to wait for an ideal job to exercise your work-ethic muscles, just like you don’t need to wait for a gym subscription to train; you can begin doing push-ups and sit-ups at home. The work won’t be lost; you’re building muscle, and the strength you gain will benefit you in whatever you do.

Doing great work is a mindset, and your mindset follows you wherever you go. Whether you develop a “great work” mindset or a “botch work” mindset where you are now, that mindset will follow where you go next.

Can you set a goal for yourself and pursue it, overcoming procrastination, challenges, obstacles, setbacks, and discouragement? Can you get yourself to do what you must even when you don’t feel like it? Can you keep giving your best when things aren’t going as planned? Can you give your 100% even when your ideas are not retained? Answering, “Yes!” to these questions is essential for your “great work” journey.

It’s a fallacy to think that you’re going to wake up one day in your ideal job and then you’ll start doing great work. Ain’t going to happen. You must start now, wherever you are.

By doing the work, you’ll get stronger and stronger, and when you get to that ultimate place, you’ll have already acquired the “strength” and discipline to carry the load associated with doing great work—at least more strength and discipline than if you hadn’t done the work at your previous stage.

Wherever you are, you can learn transferable skills, such as goal-setting and “goal achievement”. The skills you develop today will serve you tomorrow.

Your current work situation may not be ideal. Nevertheless, you can make the most of it. Nothing prevents you from beginning your great work journey today. Commit to producing quality work, hold yourself to high standards, and seek excellence in everything you do.

What you do today prepares you for what is coming tomorrow. Make the most of today. Maximize each season of your life, knowing that each season prepares the next. Whether you’re in the mailroom or the boardroom, do great work. Start now.
